1. Signups Are Open Now — and One Deadline Is in Two Days

Douyin Mall opened merchant registration for Double 11 on 14 September 2026 at 14:00, and the registration window runs through 11 November. Alimama, Alibaba's advertising arm, published its Double 11 merchant support programme at the 2026 m Summit on 2 September.

For brands planning Q4 in China, the practical situation is this: the rulebook for at least one major platform is now public and binding, the money on the table has been quantified, and one piece of the Alibaba programme closes on 20 September — two days from publication.

This article covers only what can be verified against first-party sources. A note on what cannot be verified appears in Section 2, because the widely circulated cross-platform timetable is not yet confirmed by the platforms themselves.

2. What Is Actually Confirmed — and What Is Not

Several Chinese trade outlets have published a full cross-platform Double 11 timetable. Checking those reports against platform sources produces conflicts that matter for planning.

Not confirmed — treat with caution

The reported Taobao/Tmall first pre-sale date appears as both 14 October and 15 October across outlets; reported JD dates appear as both 8 October and 20 October. Some of these figures match the prior year's calendar closely enough to suggest they were carried over rather than freshly sourced. Douyin's own rule text explicitly leaves the October start date provisional. We have therefore excluded all unconfirmed dates from this article.

If your media plan depends on those dates, verify them directly in each platform's merchant back office rather than relying on trade coverage.

3. Douyin's Eligibility Gate: Who Can Join

The Douyin rule sets out a hard eligibility list. Note that two of the conditions are easy to fail without noticing.

RequirementDetail
Eligible merchant typesSmall-shop platform merchants, Douyin E-Commerce Global Purchase merchants, and creators
Store typeMust not be an individual (personal) store
Experience scoreOfficial-stage 7-day average ≥ 70, or growth-stage experience score ≥ 70
Security depositMerchants on the "zero-cost onboarding" track must have paid the deposit in full
Excluded storesStores that chose "Douyin Lite single-terminal operation" at onboarding do not participate
Compliance historyNo records of counterfeit goods, confusing listings, improper gain, price violations, or fake transactions — on the store or any affiliated store
Store statusOperating, not suspended, not restricted from marketing activities
Category-specificSome categories carry extra requirements on experience score, store type or trading history; the registration page is authoritative

The "affiliated store" clause is the one to check carefully. A compliance problem in a sister store can disqualify the main store, which is a common surprise for groups running multiple accounts under one legal entity.

4. The Product Requirements Most Brands Fail

Eligibility applies at product level as well as merchant level. All four of the following must be met in the trailing 30 days, each against its own category threshold.

MetricRequirement
Product return rate (品退率)≤ category threshold for the trailing 30 days
Shipping and logistics return rate (发货物流品退率)≤ category threshold for the trailing 30 days
Product negative-review rate (差评率)≤ category threshold for the trailing 30 days
Complaint rate (投诉率)≤ category threshold for the trailing 30 days

These are visible in the Douyin Compass merchant dashboard. Brands that have not looked at them recently should do so before registration, because a single out-of-threshold metric removes the product from the campaign regardless of price competitiveness.

There are also price rules: the registered price may not exceed the lowest page price in effect during the verification period, and the estimated all-in buyer price may not exceed the lowest coupon-adjusted price. Fabricated original prices, and raising prices before the campaign specifically to discount them, are prohibited — this mirrors the "clear and honest pricing" requirement that regulators have pushed across Chinese e-commerce.

5. Two Mechanics: Instant Discount vs Direct Price Cut

Douyin offers two product-level mechanics. Merchants choose one, and a single product may participate in only one.

立减折扣 (Instant Discount)一件直降 (Direct Price Cut)
StatusPlatform-recommended mechanicOptional mechanic
Discount levelPlatform cross-store levelSingle-product level
Merchant benefitNo basket-building required; buyer gets the discount on a single item; platform carries discount messaging through the full funnelActivity price and price cut shown directly on the product
Who funds itMerchantMerchant
Stacks withSome single-product discounts, store discounts, creator discounts, other platform discountsStore discounts, creator discounts, other platform discounts
Conflicts withSuper-value purchase price, flash-sale price, one-cent purchaseOther single-product mechanics, resolved by channel and price rules

Note the constraint that surprises merchants every year: both mechanics are merchant-funded. The platform-funded element is separate and comes in the form of coupons (Section 6).

6. Where the Money Comes From: Platform-Funded Subsidies

The distinction between merchant-funded discounts and platform-funded subsidies is the single most important line in the rulebook for margin planning.

ComponentWho bears the cost
立减折扣 / 一件直降 discountMerchant
Platform consumption coupons (消费券)Platform
Platform surprise coupons (惊喜券)Platform
Platform top-up subsidy (平台加补)Platform
Trade-in subsidyGovernment / platform programme — stackable with 立减折扣, but not with red packets or points

The rule states explicitly that platform coupons, red packets and similar benefits carry no cost to the merchant unless separately agreed. Douyin has also confirmed publicly that the smart coupon (智能优惠券) for this Double 11 is funded entirely by the platform, with no merchant contribution.

Shipping is also mandated: registered products must offer free shipping within China during the campaign. The carve-out list is specific — Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Tibet, Hainan, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are excluded from the free-shipping requirement.

7. The Creator Side: Three Livestream and Short-Video Programmes

Douyin runs three creator-facing programmes alongside the product mechanics. All three open for registration on the same 14 September window.

ProgrammeWho it targetsWhat it offers
超值天团直播间 (Super Value Team livestream)Qualifying top creatorsPlatform traffic support or subsidy; featured livestream channel and venue placement; campaign-branded livestream room
超值品类 / 万店钜惠 (Super Value Category / Ten Thousand Stores)Vertical creators and self-broadcasting merchantsOperations support based on incremental settled GMV; traffic support; channel and venue placement
Short-video programmeCreators with short-video capabilityReal-time traffic spend and Qianchuan rebates against incremental settled GMV; extra content-side traffic support

Creator eligibility requires no more than four false-advertising violations in the trailing 30 days and no serious violations such as prohibited goods, counterfeits or fraud. Merchants whose creator partners fail these checks lose access to the corresponding programme.

One operational note: creators must confirm session details and stock three days before going live. Failure to confirm can void participation.

8. Alimama's Three Levers: AI Targeting, Subsidised Coupons, Tiered Rebates

Alimama's Double 11 programme, announced on 2 September, has three components.

LeverWhat it doesDisclosed evidence
万相点睛 (AI targeting)Infers latent purchase intent from search, browsing and purchase behaviour, moving beyond demographic and interest labels to find buyers the brand had not consideredThe furniture brand Linshi Home's fabric-bed campaign expanded its audience from home-decoration shoppers to e-sports audiences, with new customers accounting for over 83% of transaction value
Smart coupon subsidyPlatform funds several billion yuan of coupon subsidies; AI sets the subsidy tier dynamically based on the merchant's spend level; coverage extended from keyword placements to audience targeting and full-store product promotionDuring 618, the 无界智惠券 product drove over RMB 18 billion in transactions; the Oidire flagship store saw a 30% lift in search conversion after stacking the subsidy; babycare saw smart coupons account for over 25% of driven transactions
Tiered rebate"One merchant, one policy" incentive structure by merchant sizeTopbrand: RMB 2 million-plus spend qualifies for up to 55% effect-coupon rebate; Taobao in-feed: tiered rebate up to 13% traffic return; Taobao app launch screen "early lock" first tranche closes 20 September

For smaller merchants, Alimama describes a multi-tier cash subsidy running from the pre-campaign reservoir period through the full campaign, with payout scaling to achievement.

The 20 September date is the actionable one this week. The launch-screen "early lock" benefit is a first-tranche, limited allocation — brands intending to bid for it need to be in the platform now.

9. The Strategic Shift: New-Customer Growth, Not Ad Spend

Read together, both platforms' programmes point at the same change in how campaign performance is judged.

Alimama has said explicitly that it will no longer assess merchants purely on advertising spend volume, and will instead weight new-customer growth and real transaction conversion. Douyin's rulebook makes the same move from the other direction: resource support is tied to genuine transactions and fulfilment capability, with a cleanup rule that strips resources from products whose registered price or all-in buyer price does not meet the requirement, or whose stock, listing status or order quality fails checks — even after successful registration.

For media planners, three consequences follow:

  1. Registration is not the finish line. Douyin checks products continuously and can withdraw platform resources mid-campaign. The rate card you registered is not the rate card you keep.
  2. Coupon economics are now tiered and behavioural. Alimama's subsidy tier is set dynamically against spend level, so the marginal return on incremental budget is a curve, not a step.
  3. The AI targeting layer changes who you reach, not just how efficiently. The Linshi Home case — a furniture product sold to e-sports audiences — is the clearest illustration: the tool is looking for non-obvious intent, which means audience-set definitions inherited from last year may be the wrong starting point.

10. What International Brands Should Do This Week

PriorityActionWhy
P0Check the trailing-30-day product return, negative-review and complaint rates against category thresholds for every SKU you intend to registerA single out-of-threshold metric removes the product regardless of price
P0Confirm the operating entity's experience score is ≥ 70 and that no affiliated store carries a disqualifying compliance recordThe affiliated-store clause catches multi-account groups
P0Decide by 20 September whether to bid for the Taobao app launch-screen early-lock benefitFirst tranche closes; allocation is limited
P1Model the campaign on merchant-funded pricing plus platform-funded coupons as two separate linesConfusing them leads to incorrect margin assumptions
P1Rebuild audience definitions around intent rather than inherited demographic or interest setsThe AI targeting layer is designed to find non-obvious buyers
P1Choose between 立减折扣 and 一件直降 per SKU, and register before the campaign window opensThe choice is binding per product and drives how discounts display through the funnel
P2Brief creator partners on the three-day session-confirmation requirementNon-confirmation voids programme eligibility
P2Confirm free-shipping capability, noting the excluded regionsFree shipping is a condition, not an option

11. Key Takeaways

  • Douyin Mall opened Double 11 registration on 14 September 2026, running to 11 November. The October start date is described in the official rule text as provisional ("10月xx日") and has not been published.
  • The Douyin rulebook is specific and enforceable: merchant eligibility requires a non-personal store, an experience score of at least 70, and a clean compliance record including affiliated stores.
  • Products must clear four trailing-30-day thresholds — return rate, logistics return rate, negative-review rate and complaint rate — each against its category benchmark.
  • Douyin offers two mechanisms, 立减折扣 and 一件直降. Merchants choose one per product, and both are merchant-funded.
  • Platform consumption coupons, surprise coupons and top-up subsidies are platform-funded and carry no merchant cost unless separately agreed. Douyin has confirmed the Double 11 smart coupon is entirely platform-funded.
  • Alimama's programme has three levers: the 万相点睛 AI targeting product, several billion yuan of platform coupon subsidy, and a tiered rebate reaching 55% effect-coupon return for Topbrand spend above RMB 2 million, with up to 13% traffic return on Taobao in-feed.
  • The Taobao app launch-screen early-lock first tranche closes on 20 September 2026.
  • Both platforms have shifted assessment away from advertising volume toward new-customer growth and genuine transaction conversion — which means resource support can be withdrawn mid-campaign if product metrics deteriorate.
  • Data caution: cross-platform timetables circulating in Chinese trade media are internally inconsistent, and report Taobao/Tmall pre-sale as both 14 and 15 October, and JD as both 8 and 20 October. Verify against each platform's merchant back office before committing media budgets.
