1. The Two Newcomers — and What Changed

Double 11 has always been a contest between incumbents. In 2026, two platforms that had never run a Double 11 of their own are in the field: Xiaohongshu E-Commerce and WeChat Store. They arrive at opposite ends of the commerce spectrum — one built on discovery and creator recommendation, the other on social distribution and existing user relationships — and both are subsidising aggressively enough to compress the margins of the players that have held this event for a decade.

Three things are worth separating from the usual subsidy noise.

First, both newcomers are competing on mechanics rather than discount depth. Xiaohongshu's headline subsidy is 15%, and it is split across three merchant tiers by how much the merchant is willing to put in. WeChat Store's headline is up to 100% platform funding, but it is conditional on being classified as a "good store". In both cases the subsidy is not a blanket discount; it is a price for something.

Second, both are extending duration rather than deepening it. WeChat Store is running 35 days, the longest window in the field, and Xiaohongshu is running a full 32 days with a second peak. The instinct is to lengthen the runway, not to concentrate it.

Third, neither describes itself as a promotion platform. WeChat Store's own framing is that participating is about matching how consumers already shop rather than about price competition. Xiaohongshu's is built around livestream week operations rather than around a sale.

For an international brand, this matters less as a sales opportunity than as a signal about where the next two years of Chinese social commerce are being built.

2. The Confirmed Calendar

PlatformCampaign windowFirst appearanceNote

Tmall / Taobao15 Oct pre-sale – 13 NovNoDeposit 15 Oct 20:00; balance payment and spot sale 20 Oct 20:00

Two operational notes that catch people out. Taobao's 88VIP large-value coupon window opens 7 Oct 20:00 and runs to 12 Oct — before most campaigns are live. And Tmall's price verification period starts 6 September, with a pre-sale price increase of more than 20% judged as "raise then discount" and disqualifying the listing from the official discount.

3. Xiaohongshu E-Commerce: A 15% Subsidy Split Three Ways

The Xiaohongshu E-Commerce Learning Centre's operations guide describes a subsidy structure that is more interesting than a single headline number. The organising principle is co-funded promotion: platform and merchant each put in half, with the platform's contribution sized to match the merchant's commitment tier.

TierMerchant contributionPlatform subsidyEligibility
Basic (基础档)3%1%–5%Open
Advanced (进阶档)5%3%–7%Open
Volume (冲量档)10%6%–15%Designated quality products only

The volume tier is where the real money sits: 15% is the platform's maximum contribution, and it is reserved for specified products. Discount depth for the programme runs from 75% of list at the shallowest to RMB 600 off at the deepest, delivered as a discount coupon triggered randomly on the product detail page rather than issued to the whole audience.

Two variants exist. Basket co-funded promotion suits merchants whose business is livestream-led and whose catalogue is easy to basket; the threshold is personalised per user rather than a single posted number, and merchants must submit at least five points. It requires three days' notice — creating a livestream plan, attaching products to it, and clicking "product explanation" during the broadcast. Hit-product co-funded promotion targets merchants whose core surface is notes rather than livestream, and stacks with platform coupons, merchant coupons and buyer coupons.

The requirement to plan three days ahead is the operationally significant part. For a merchant whose livestream calendar is built week to week, this is a structural constraint rather than a formality.

4. Xiaohongshu's Second Engine: Fan Groups and Two-Stage Deposits

The same guide describes two mechanisms that sit behind the subsidy and matter more for brands building a durable base.

Shopping fan groups (购物粉丝团). The disclosed figure is that users who join a shopping fan group generate DGMV 207% higher than those who do not. This is the mechanism that converts a livestream audience into an addressable private group, and it is the piece that makes Xiaohongshu's model different from a pure traffic-buying channel.

Two-stage deposit pre-sale (定金预售两段式). Deposits lock demand in an early window; balances are collected later. Combined with the guide's observation that the campaign produces a two-peak shape — a first high point on the opening day and the cycle peak on 11 November — this describes a deliberate attempt to spread rather than concentrate spending.

A correction worth recording. Community deal forums circulating during the holiday claimed that Xiaohongshu's Double 11 would run "spot sale only, no deposits" and that it was "not touching deposits". The official operations guide describes two-stage deposit pre-sale as a core mechanism. The community claim should be treated as unverified; the figures above come from the platform's own material.

5. WeChat Store: Thirty-Five Days and Up to 100% Subsidy

WeChat Store announced its first Double 11 at a merchant briefing and set the window at 12 October to 15 November — 35 days, the longest in the field, covering a reservoir period, a selling period and a clearance tail in one continuous schedule.

The subsidy structure runs on two tracks:

TrackStructureWho qualifies
Co-funded coupon (混资券)Platform and merchant split cost 1:1; base coupon reaches 12.5% off, so the merchant's maximum carry on the activity price is 6.25%All merchants
Platform-funded coupon (全资券)Up to 100% platform-funded on eligible productsBrand good stores, hit-product good stores and service good stores meeting the conditions

On top of that sits a livestream incentive worth up to 2 million growth points per account across the campaign, made up of a base of up to 900,000 points for a single session plus up to 300,000 in stacked incentives. The headline is large; the way to read it is that it is earned by declaring a session in advance, broadcasting as planned and hitting a GMV threshold — which is a scheduling commitment, not a bonus.

The platform-funded streamer-exclusive coupon is fully funded by WeChat and can be shared into WeChat groups and private messages. A user may use it three times per streamer or store, and it stacks with cross-store basket discounts and some category coupons.

6. WeChat Store's Core Change: From Single-Stream Selling to Long-Term User Operation

The most useful thing the merchant briefing disclosed was not a subsidy number but a behavioural one: WeChat Store frames its first Double 11 as a move from single-session livestream selling toward long-term user operation.

The ecosystem numbers support that framing. In 2025, brand selling through creators grew at 4.3 times the platform's overall rate. During 618 2026, brand transactions through creators rose 225% year on year. In the first half of 2026, personal-care and cosmetics brand GMV on WeChat Store rose 144% with 617% growth in new users.

The case study the platform put on stage is more instructive than the aggregates. Ahead of a Lin Qingxuan session, the creator posted a teaser video that took 2.39 million plays. A livestream that had been expecting roughly 15,000 reservations drew 410,000 viewers and exceeded RMB 10 million in GMV. Brands, creators and platform jointly turned a few hours of broadcast into a longer process: seeding and reservation before the stream, explanation and conversion during it, and continued service through customer support and private channels afterwards.

For a brand evaluating whether to enter, that is the part to watch. It says the asset being built is a repeat-purchase relationship, not a GMV spike.

7. What the Incumbents Changed Too

The newcomers are the story, but the incumbents adjusted in ways that matter for planning.

JD removed the pre-sale entirely. The campaign opens with spot sale on 12 October at 20:00, with the stated positioning of direct reduction on spot goods. JD framed the event at its 22 September merchant conference as "AI-driven, certainty growth".

Tmall moved to a store-wide official discount. The core mechanic is now a store-wide official reduction applying to single items, with no basket-building, funded by the merchant. Critically, store-level basket discounts, percentage discounts and threshold gifts are all voided during the campaign period. The established playbook of stacking a threshold gift first and then hitting a cross-store threshold does not work in Tmall's official venue this year.

The division of labour inside Taobao and Tmall split. Pre-sale applies to Tmall stores; Taobao consumer stores go straight to spot sale.

The coupon contest fragmented. Coupon entry points now span at least four platforms and, on Xiaohongshu alone, several distinct surfaces — venue-wide coupons, product-detail and livestream pop-ups, large time-limited coupons released at set times each evening, and buyer-streamer-specific coupons. The practical effect for consumers is that coupon hunting moves from guarding one venue to sweeping four platforms, which is a real change in how promotions are discovered.

8. Why This Matters for International Brands

DevelopmentWhat it changes
Two new platforms in the biggest sale of the yearChannel selection is no longer a four-way choice between incumbents; discovery-led and social-distribution-led commerce now compete for the same Q4 budget
Subsidies are conditional, not blanketXiaohongshu's 15% is tiered by merchant contribution; WeChat Store's 100% is gated on "good store" status. Neither is available without meeting a condition, which converts a pricing decision into a classification decision
WeChat Store running 35 daysInventory, content and staffing plans built around a two-week peak need to stretch. WeChat Store's own framing — a continuous reservoir, selling and clearance period — assumes the long shape
JD cancelling pre-saleDeposit-funded cash-flow planning no longer applies on JD. The commitment moves to physical stock
Tmall voiding store-level basket discountsDiscount-stacking logic in existing promotional plans becomes invalid in the official venue and needs rebuilding before 15 October
Xiaohongshu requiring three days' notice for livestream plansLivestream calendars need to be committed further ahead than a normal weekly cycle
Fan groups delivering 207% higher DGMV for membersThe incremental value is in group retention, not in broadcast reach. That changes what to measure during the campaign

9. Open Questions

Three things are not yet settled and are worth watching rather than assuming.

Whether the "good store" thresholds are disclosed. WeChat Store's up-to-100% subsidy is the largest number in the field, and it is explicitly conditioned on good-store classification across brand, hit-product and service dimensions. Without the criteria, a merchant cannot model the expected subsidy.

Whether WeChat Store's October dates hold. Its window was announced at the briefing; the Xiaohongshu and JD dates are independently confirmed by their own operational material. WeChat Store's figure comes from a single platform announcement.

Where the two newcomers land on return on ad spend. Both are subsidising heavily to acquire habits in a single event. The platforms' framing is about long-term user operation, but neither has published cohort retention data. Subsidy-driven acquisition and durable demand are different things, and the distinction will only be visible after the campaign closes.

A separate caution on sourcing: several high-circulating figures circulating in deal forums for this campaign are attributed to years that cannot be right, and aggregator pages have mis-dated at least one analysis by more than a year. Platform operational material is the reliable tier; community deal posts are not.

10. Action Plan

PriorityActionWhy
P0Rebuild promotional plans for Tmall before 15 October, removing reliance on store-level basket discounts, threshold discounts and threshold giftsThey are voided during the campaign period
P0Check the Tmall price verification position now — it started 6 September, and a pre-sale price increase above 20% disqualifies the listing from the official discountThe window opened before the campaign did

P1Commit the Q4 livestream calendar at least three days ahead for Xiaohongshu, and attach products to session plansCo-funded basket promotion requires three days' notice
P1Re-plan cash flow for JD without deposit lock-inPre-sale is cancelled; the commitment is stock

P2Build or join a shopping fan group on Xiaohongshu, and measure group members separatelyMembers generate 207% higher DGMV
P2Instrument the campaign by day and phase rather than as a single eventTwo newcomers are using two-peak and 35-day structures that single-number reporting will obscure

11. Key Takeaways

  • Two platforms are running their first Double 11 in 2026: Xiaohongshu E-Commerce and WeChat Store. Xiaohongshu's window is 10 October to 11 November; WeChat Store's is 12 October to 15 November.
  • WeChat Store's 35-day window is the longest in the field, structured as a continuous reservoir, selling and clearance period rather than a peak.
  • Xiaohongshu's subsidy is co-funded at 50/50 and tiered by merchant contribution, with the platform's maximum at 15% in the volume tier; discount depth runs from 75% of list to RMB 600 off, triggered randomly rather than issued to everyone.
  • Xiaohongshu's livestream co-funded promotion requires three days' notice — a livestream plan, attached products and a product-explanation click during the broadcast.
  • Shopping fan group members generate 207% higher DGMV, and deposit pre-sale is a two-stage mechanism. Community claims that Xiaohongshu would run "spot sale only, no deposits" conflict with the platform's own operations guide.
  • WeChat Store offers a co-funded coupon reaching 12.5% (merchant carries at most 6.25% of the activity price) and a platform-funded coupon reaching 100% for qualifying good stores, plus up to 2 million growth points across the campaign.
  • WeChat Store frames its first Double 11 as a move from single-session livestream selling to long-term user operation, supported by brand creator transactions up 225% during 618 and cosmetics GMV up 144% with new users up 617% in the first half of 2026.
  • JD cancelled the pre-sale and opens with spot sale on 12 October at 20:00. Tmall moved to a store-wide official discount and voided store-level basket discounts during the campaign.
  • The practical consequence for planning: Tmall discount-stacking logic must be rebuilt, JD cash-flow assumptions must change, and livestream calendars must be committed further ahead than a normal weekly cycle.
